Mmmmm .. bagels. Nom nom nom. I'm sure you realize that an entire batch of bagels lasts no more than 24 hours. At least not in my house!

- Usually, yeah. The first batch, though, I shoved a bunch in the freezer! (They're gone now, though.)

Oooh, do you have the Tramontina Dutch Oven from Walmart? It looks just like mine!

-Yeah, I think so. :) It's either the Tramontina from Walmart or the "Member's Mark" from Sam's Club - other than the colors, they're virtually identical. We're a two-dutch oven family now. Either way, they're great, aren't they?

Wow, a lot of work. I took my son for a homeschool tour of a bagel place and the guy showed them how they made them, etc. Pretty interesting, and the guy was a real character. Called himself the Bagel Nazi, like the soup nazi on Seinfeld, because he wouldn't let one guy buy bagels from any more after he complained about the price. I'm not real fond of bagels, but his were good!

- I especially love working with sourdough - it's so simple, yet so complicated. The bagel shop where I stop sometimes in the morning has a window between the counter and the kitchen, where I can watch the process - on a commercial scale, it's amazing! But you're right - at home, it is kind of a lot of work (though well worth it!).

Alright, that's my kind of scale! I saw a cartoon once explaining the proper way to use a scale - the lady was lying on her back with the scale balanced on her feet so she was looking up at it - perfect!

- So THAT'S what I've been doing wrong!

I love the bagel recipe in the Tassajara Bread Book.

My brother taught me how to do it, and we used to add lots of minced onion to the dough. MMM

- Oh, fear not, additions are up next! I wanted to figure out the base recipe first. I'm orderly like that. ;)

I recently decided to make my first butternut squash dish and now I find out you can roast the seeds. I'm feeling quite pleased with my decision to try something new already. Let's see if I feel this way after I make the butternut squash soup.

We love butternut squash soup! In fact, we just had it last week - and this time, there wasn't enough leftover for lunches for me. You could even use the roasted seeds as a garnish ON the soup - how orderly would THAT be? (Me, I just eat 'em out of hand - they don't make it to the soup. :? )

My Christmas cactus is in full bloom right now, with another one that will bloom next week. They stay outside all summer, and they are beautiful. My third I usually refer to as my MLK Day cactus, it never blooms before then. :?

Wow, really? I thought ours was early. . . though it seems to be a little later than usual this year. And mine lives outside most of the summer too - I brought it in about a month ago when frost first threatened.

orange tarragon marinade sounds good...i might have to play with that idea. enjoy your final days of grilling.

- Katie, it really is terrific! And we're so fortunate to have a few "stolen" days of nice weather. . .
