Them’s the Breaks March 4, 2009

Posted by Toy Lady in Home, Information, random stuff, What we're watching.

About a year ago, Peeps and I stumbled on an original series on AMC.

AMC.  That would be American Movie Classics, right?  Well, I guess so, but Breaking Bad is neither a movie nor a classic.

It’s cable,what can I say?  😯

That, and it’s really no less weird than The Middleman on the Family Channel, which I still don’t really get.  🙄

So anyway.  We stumbled upon  a “dark comedy” and decided to give it a try.

Dude.  This series gives new meaning to the phrase “dark comedy.”

So we started watching it a year ago, and you’re wondering why I’m just now mentioning it, aren’t you?

Well, here’s the thing.  The new (second) season starts this Sunday, just as Monk and Psyche and Leverage have ended for the season.  Yay!  New TV!  😆

PhotobucketSo what, you ask, is Breaking Bad?

Imagine being a high school teacher.  🙄

Yeah, sad, huh?  😥

A high school chemistry teacher.

That’s worse than trying to ride herd over a firm of lawyers.   😯

That’s the proper term, you know – a herd of cattle, a flock of geese, a murder of crows, and a firm of lawyers.  😉

Anyway.  Walter White (played by Bryan Cranston) is a high school chemistry teacher who has been diagnosed with cancer – and he’s terminal.  Very much so, apparently.

He has a handicapped son, a pregnant wife, and, unfortunately, little, if anything, in the way of a nest egg.

And he’s dying.

One day, since he’s gonna die soon anyway, Walter goes on a ride-along with his brother-in-law the cop, and they get involved in a meth lab bust.

Waiting in the car, Walter spots one of his former high school students climbing out the window.

A meth dealer, escaping from a drug bust.

A  chemist with financial responsibilities who (probably) won’t live out the year.

Can they strike a deal?  Why yes, it turns out they can.

Walte’s got the skills – he can make (cook?) the cleanest, purest meth his new partner, Jesse, has ever seen.

And Jesse’s got the connections.

Remember, Walter’s dying.  He pretty much doesn’t care anymore.

And he’s a badass.  He’s calling the shots – including his insistence that processing the “product” is done in a camper, in the middle of the desert, in their underwear.

Evidently, meth labs smell.  See, it’s educational, too!  😉

Oh, but wait, there’s more!  AMC, in their wisdom, has decided to run a first season marathon of Breaking Bad before the new season starts – just so you can get caught up and figure out what the heck is going on!  Clever, huh?  😀

Seriously, fire up the DVR (or the VCR or the DVD burner, or whatever you have to fire up)  – AMC is running the first season of Breaking Bad starting Friday at 8pm Eastern (real) time.   Give it a try.  This series certainly isn’t for everyone, but if a dark, twisted comedy-drama appeals to you (emphasis on “twisted”), then you just might enjoy this.

Give it a try, and let me know what you think.

Hi there…. dtr and I love Breaking Bad and the fact that it is filmed here in and around Albuquerque makes it even more fun. Sometimes we recognize places we drive by and the studio shoots all over town. Yes, it is dark. Really dark. But I can handle one a season.

The other show that is filmed right here with even more in town places is “In Plain Sight” which I really like. Zany but not so dark all the time. Victim Witness Program really does exist here too. Second season coming soon on USA.

Thanks for all the yummy food stuff and knowing you feed the Kitty well (that is a big bag of food) and that Jarly is still lying around and sneaking up on you. That was funny.

Good week of posting…… thanks again.

Hi, Jude – as always, it’s good to see you! We’ve got the season premiere on the DVR to watch . . . soon. 😀

And yes, we love “In Plain Sight” too. They’ve done some “crossover” stuff with the Law & Order “universe” – where Mary has had to go to NY to pick up a witness – I think that’s the coolest thing! (What can I say, I’m easily amused.)

You know, that boy just keeps getting bigger and bigger . . . and in this case, he’s testing to see just how far “out” of the kitchen he really needs to be. We have learned not to treat him for “getting” out – just for “staying” out.

An important distinction, apparently. 🙄
