Wow.  It’s been a year since we walked out of the local Animal Shelter with Jarlaxle.  It seems as though he’s been around a lot longer than that.

When we brought him home, he was a trim 76 pounds of young friendly puppy.  He was mostly housebroken.  And the cat hated him on sight.

He’s a full grown dog now.  At least, I seriously hope he’s finished growing.  As of a week ago, he weighed in at 120 pounds.  You tend to notice this when he steps on your feet.  Which he seems to be fond of doing.

In all honesty, he hasn’t changed much other than his size.  When we first saw him in his cell at the shelter, he was lying there being very quiet.  Unlike every other dog there.  He still loves to lie around.  A lot.  This dog can sleep like you wouldn’t believe.

He’s learned a few things since he came to live with us.  He’s gotten to be a much better behaved dog, for the most part.  Although, we still need to work on not chasing squirrels.  Or UPS trucks.  Or people on motorcycles.  Or school buses.

He’s very protective of us.  He barks whenever anyone comes even near the house.  Like our neighbors with whom we share a driveway.  And the doorbell makes him very alert.  Even if it’s only on whatever show we happen to be watching.

He also keeps a sharp eye on anyone in the house.  He follows them around, just to make sure they’re not up to something.  Which is not all that bad a thing, really.  And kind of funny at times.

We still have some work to do with him.  And I’m pretty sure he’s got some more training in mind for us.  But on the whole, he’s a very good dog.  He hasn’t destroyed anything other than his own toys in quite a while now.  And it seems that he’s completely stopped trying to eat the house.

It’s been good to have him here.  We’ve enjoyed his company and his antics.  We’re looking forward to many more years with him.  Even if he does take up an awful lot of the floor.  Oh, and the cat still can’t stand him.
