Monday Musings on Tuesday: June Already? June 1, 2010

Posted by Toy Lady in Musings, Shopping With Peeps.

Wow, what a weekend it’s been!  I trust you’ve had a beautiful and refreshing long weekend – here in upstate New York, the weather, at least, has been perfect!

PhotobucketThe days have been sunny and warm, the nights have been cooler and dry, and I’ve been watering the garden every morning.

I filled my strawberry pot with flowers last week, which all seem to be thriving – and they’ve got Surly Boy‘s panther sculpture out there on the deck to keep them company.

A pile of steel bars, twisted, bent, and (of course) welded together to form a lurking giant cat – he actually makes a gorgeous addition to the backyard.

PhotobucketSpeaking of Surly Boy.

He had the holiday off and came home for the long weekend.  The saddest thing about working nights, I think, is when you have a holiday and you’re still used to sleeping all day. . . and you and your buddy take over the living room.

My goodness, that boy can snore!  He must get that from his father . . .

So, we spent part of the weekend at my parents’ house, enjoying the weather and sitting around under the trees in the backyard talking about this, that, and the other thing.Photobucket

When the topic of the recent oil spill came up, I made a comment about Our Beloved Leader’s timely response, and, um, a bird immediately pooped on my my lap.

A comment was made about “Chicago politics.”

I shut up after that.

We tried our hand, this past week, at stuffing sausage.

While it worked, we do have a ways to go – we had some problems with the casings.  First, we couldn’t get more than a couple of feet of casing on the stuffer attachment to the grinder.

Then, I think we may have stuffed the sausages too full – they kept splitting on us.

But you know what?  That’s OK.  The leaky sausage was perfectly fine cooked up and sprinkled on pizza. . .  I’m just saying.

And it’s time for yet another episode of Shopping with Peeps!

We’re in the supermarket, early Sunday morning, and there’s the display of marked-down items.

What we like to refer to as the “wow what a deal aisle” (or, sometimes, the “aisle of misfit foods”).

What have we here?  Two Mini Funnel’s?

Exactly where do people have to go to learn about when to use – and, even more importantly, when NOT to use – apostrophes?

And once again, it’s time for the weekly menu plan.  Summer just seems to have jumped in with both feet, doesn’t it?  While we’ve got the temperatures this week, it looks like we’ve also got a bit of stormy weather to contend with.

Monday –  It may or may not rain, so we decided to play it safe.  While we were  sending The Boy off and doing some gardening and other house-and-yard work, we dug some chicken out of the freezer – along with some rice, beans and empanada sauce we picked up a while ago, it’ll make a nice quick, simple meal – that won’t get washed out if we get that thunderstorm.

Tuesday – looks like it’s going to be one of those absolutely perfect evenings – no more rain, not too hot – just right for grilling a couple of ribeye steaks!  We’ll enjoy those with some grilled potato slices and tossed salad – the perfect cookout, just a day later than everyone else, that’s all.

Wednesday – We pulled the last two portions of fish out of the freezer – we’ll just grill mahi-mahi and serve with a lemon-ginger vinaigrette, the rest of last year’s green beans, and maybe some brown rice.

Thursday – Since it may or may not be raining, we’re playing it safe again.  Last week, I saw this risotto with leeks, broccoli and beans, and, since I have a few leeks wasting away in the fridge and some broccoli leftover from  the weekend’s relish tray, obviously this is the perfect time to try it, right?

Friday – Pizza night.  We’ve got steak up Tuesday, and there are always leftovers, so, for me, anyway, I’m going to look forward all week to my fabulous cheesesteak pizza – thinly sliced ribeye, caramelized onions and provolone cheese, on top of Peeps’s fabulous sourdough crust – THE YUM!

Always fun to read about your daily doings. Hahaha at the bird “commenting” on your oil spill commentary 🙂
Wow – Surly Boy must be a pretty talented artist! Granted I don’t know a lot about art, but that panther looks impressive!

It has been interesting, over the years, to watch his skills develop – he tried drawing for a while, and ceramics, but he really enjoys the metal-work. Maybe someday we’ll see something of his at a park or a zoo or something!
