PhotobucketLast weekend, I picked up a couple of nice hunks of pork belly at the public market, so this weekend, Peeps was doing some smoking.    We invited our neighbors, the Harley Family, to, if they had anything they wanted smoked, bring it on over.  So they brought over several packages of venison – after all, dear season is right around the corner, and I’m sure their freezer will be re-filled with plenty of game meat!    Peeps had a ball coming up with “the perfect” rub for venison – plenty of rosemary, garlic, black pepper and juniper berries – I think he’s almost wishing he was a hunter!

And we know it’s fall the same way we know it’s spring – the crocuses (crocii?) are sprouting!

A few years ago, I went ahead and planted about a dozen saffron crocus bulbs in the herb garden.  They blossom in the fall rather than the spring like “regular” crocus flowers.  And I’m out there every day with tweezers harvesting the saffron threads. . .

So we enjoyed boneless beef short ribs the other night, and Peeps is going to tell you more about them, since he did most of the cooking that night.

But I will say – they were good.  GOOD.  We almost never have to chase the dog away from the table, but this time we did.

And you how else I know it was really good?  I had no leftovers for lunch.

That’s not to say there were no leftovers – of course there were.  But someone (who shall remain nameless enjoyed not one, but two containers of leftovers after we went to bed, leaving two.  Peeps had one for lunch, and I left the last one for the nameless one.

The sacrifices a mom will make.

I picked up the cutest little gift ribbons and bows when we went shopping – I could not resist spending a buck on each container of 6 bows and a roll of ribbon.

One was purple and printed with the phrase “it’s the thought that counts,” while the other was green and printed with “Recycled Gift” – given my problems gift-shopping, how could I resist either?

Peeps brought this news story to my attention – apparently a high school forensic science club (we did NOT have that club when I was in high school!) visited the local (Staten Island) morgue, when they saw a brain.  In a jar.  With a typed label with the name of their dead classmate.

Dude.

The mental picture – I just couldn’t help it.  It just happened.

And once again, it’s time for the weekly menu plan.  We are into full-on AUTUMN mode.  The days are getting shorter, the mornings are colder (though no frost yet!), and although we’re trying to hold on to the tail end of summer, we’re starting to crave the comfort foods of fall.  This week’s weather seems to offer the best of both worlds.

Monday –  We dug one last quart of Cincinnati chili from the freezer – next time he makes it, I’ll pressure Peeps into blogging about it – it’s well worth trying.

Tuesday – We’ve still got some Chinese pork in the freezer – so how does pork fried rice sound? Yeah, I thought it sounded pretty good too.

Wednesday – We’ve got swim class on alternate Wednesdays, and this week is it.  Wednesday is traditionally soup night, and this week, we’d planned to do a beef stew.  However, I miscalculated the liquid-to-thickener ratio, so we’re going to do beef and barley soup instead.  It’ll still be wonderful, though.

Thursday – It looks like we have a lovely, late grill-worthy evening, so we’re going to skewer and grill some chicken tenders that we dug out of the freezer – chicken tenders with tossed salad and some heirloom rice that we picked up in the “WOW what a deal” aisle of our supermarket – it’ll be like a taste of summer.  In October.

Friday – And Friday is, as always, pizza night.  I should still have some fresh tomatoes for my pizza, and plenty of fresh herbs, and, frankly, along with a bit of cheese that’s all I need.
